Which Thing is Not Like the Others? Another Blatant Example Proving Why to Use Caution when Relying Heavily on Industry Classification in LinkedIn Searches

Take a look at this: Process Engineer at Pilot Chemical Company - Higher Education

Do you see the issue here?  Read it again carefully.  What seems to be out of place?  Going to back to Sesame Street – which thing is not like the others?  Hint – look at the industry!

Pilot Chemical Company is not Higher Education.

This was too good to pass up so I just had to post it.  It truly drives home my point made in two earlier postings that industry classification can be subjective when people create their profile in LinkedIn.  So, you’ll need to be aware of this when names sourcing via LinkedIn.  Here are the two articles:

The quick lesson - had I only used titles and ONLY selected “chemicals” as an industry, I wouldn’t have found him.  So, put another way, I’ll scream it again - DO NOT ASSUME WHEN IT COMES TO INDUSTRY.  Though usually this is a clear objective choice, subjectivity can come into play, and one person may choose an industry that they think is clear but that most others scratch their heads over.  Or, they flat out make a mistake!  My guess is that this person did just that.  Either way, to get close to comprehensive results (as much as possible) think large and think creatively.  Exhaust all of the options you have available to you!
